MPV Video Player 0.25.0 recently released, is a free, open source, and cross-platform movie player based on MPlayer and mplayer2. MPV is a fork of mplayer2 and MPlayer. It shares some features with the former projects while introducing many more new features. It supports a wide variety of video file formats, audio and video codecs, and subtitle types. - The MPlayer’s options parser was improved upon to act more like other CLI programs, and many option names and semantics were reworked to make them more intuitive and memorable

- Leverages on FFmpeg hwaccel APIs to support VDPAU, VAAPI, DXVA2, VDA and VideoToolbox video decoding acceleration
- Comes with a straightforward C API, designed to make mpv usable as a library as well as facilitate easy integration into other applications
- mpv is still under active development, focusing on code refactoring and cleanups as well as adding features
